QUALIFICATIONS

To register to vote in California, an individual must meet the following qualifications:

  • Be a United States Citizen
  • Be 18 Years of age on or before the day of the Election
  • Be a resident of California
  • Not be in Prison or on parole for the conviction of a felony
  • Not have been judged by a court to be mentally incompetent to register and vote
OBTAIN REGISTRATION FORM

You can register to vote in person or obtain a mail-in application from:

  • County Clerk's Offices (see locations below)
  • Division of motor vehicles
  • Aid to families with dependent children (AFDC) offices
  • Medicaid offices
  • Food stamp offices
  • Women, infants and children (WIC) offices
  • Agencies that provide services to people with disabilities
  • Public libraries
  • Post offices

ABSENTEE BALLOTS

Any registered voter may vote by absentee ballot. To vote absentee you should:

1. Apply in writing to your county elections official (County Clerk).

2. Complete the absentee ballot application that is included in your Sample Ballot, which your County Clerk mails to you prior to each election; or

3. Or you may download and complete an absentee ballot application here.

Any mailed request for an absentee ballot must be received between 29 days (Oct 4) and 7 days (Oct 26) prior to the election. The following information must be included:

  • Your registered address
  • The address to which the absentee ballot is to be sent
  • The name and date of the election in which you would like to vote absentee
  • Your written signature (as registered)


How do I Return the Absentee Ballot and What is the Deadline?

The ballot can be mailed to the county elections official, delivered in person to any county polling place, or delivered on your behalf by a legally-allowable third party (relative or person residing in the same household as you). All ballots must be returned no later than 8:00 p.m. on election day.
